Ketamine for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome

People who suffer from severe and chronic pain conditions such as certain types of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome often feel as if they have few options for relief. With ever-decreasing prescription medication choices available and few over-the-counter options that actually help with the level of pain they experience, chronic pain can be life-altering in the worst way for these patients. Finding ways to alleviate that pain and live a better life can seem impossible – but with the use of today’s more advanced techniques, it’s not.

What Is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome?

Perhaps you have not heard of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) yet, or you’d like to know more about it. For starters, EDS is a group of diseases that are characterized by joints, skin, blood vessels, ligaments, and internal organs that may be fragile connective tissues. One in 5,000 are affected by EDS. Symptoms of EDS can include overly flexible joints that can easily dislocate, translucent, elastic and skin that’s easily bruised. Some may experience dilation and the rupture of major blood vessels, but that is less often the case.

What Causes EDS?

EDS can be inherited. Plenty of times, people experience no symptoms until later in their lives. That’s typical of hereditary disorders, most of which become evident during puberty. Symptoms can also be induced by trauma, illness, or a virus. Different forms of EDS are caused by different faults in genes that lead to weak connective tissues. Depending on the type of EDS a person has, the defective gene is either inherited from one or both parents. The defective gene is not necessarily always inherited but instead can appear in a person for the first time.

Ketamine and Ehlers-Danlos

When you feel like you’ve tried everything, maybe it’s time to take a different approach to pain management. Instead of treating symptoms with medication that temporarily relieves symptoms, consider a longer-lasting and more meaningful path to relief. Consider ketamine infusion as a way to achieve less pain and more life in the days that follow every treatment session.

Unlike medications that you take only after symptoms begin, ketamine is given as a medically monitored intravenous infusion. This infusion is scheduled rather than given as the result of the onset of pain. The result of the infusion is typically less pain immediately during and after, but also a lasting effect that lessens the severity of pain for days or even weeks to come.

Relief from Many Angles

One issue many chronic pain sufferers encounter with their treatments is that these medications or therapeutic remedies may interfere with one another. They may cause other issues or symptoms or aggravate other health concerns.

Many people who have chronic pain may experience depression or anxiety as a result, and the medications they take for these things may cause serious interactions with one another. In particular, depression and other mental health issues are common among those with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, since this condition is relatively rare and the symptoms can be both frustrating and debilitating. That’s enough to make anyone anxious or depressed!

Ketamine has the benefit of being useful in the treatment of both mental health issues and chronic pain. It is used increasingly for the management of both major depressive disorder and anxiety, as well as to treat chronic pain. This makes it a great option for those who are suffering from several or all of these conditions since it can address these problems without complicating the treatment of each in the process.
